I just saw Revolutionary Road. I really liked it
Spoiiiilerrrsss:
I do think that it does fizzle out, but I also think that's the point. You get these big, big arguments between Kate and Leo all throughout the movie, only to find that it doesn't go anywhere. It's the very definition of being stuck in a rut. She plans to be an actress. Nope. He wants to do something different from his dad. Nope. They plan to go to Paris. Nope.
The big emotional payoff at the end, with the diy abortion and her dying, isn't really a payoff, because he still ends up working for the same bullshit company, trying to take care of the kids. Later on you find a similar couple moving in, and nothing's changed. Fuckin' scaaaary.

whoops you ruined it for me. I so wanted to see it, too.
ReplyDeleteLet me say this right off that bat instead of being a dumb ass, my comments contain spoilers so don't read it unless you don't care, have seen it, or if Andrew already ruined the movie for you.
ReplyDeleteThe movie takes itself so fucking seriously it makes it painful to watch. There's no moments, besides in the beginning when they are yelling at each other on the parkway, when it is funny, intentionally or unintentionally. Secondly, it's crazy predictable, somewhat due to the fact that it is so serious; you know there is no feel good turn-of-events in the movie from the start, and that it going to be all downhill, that they aren't gonna go to Paris. The ending isn't surprising either. The second she became pregnant I knew an abortion was imminent, and considering how he felt about it, you knew shit was gonna end poorly. Third, the crazy guy that mixes everything up is so fucking annoying. I can't believe he earned an Oscar nomination for his "throwing his wrench in the system" shit. The only way you can let yourself be affected by him, is if you are an unstable retard, like Kate Winslet's character. He's a goddamn false profit that only top-of-the-line dumb-asses fall for; he's comparable to Charles Manson. Also, the second Kathy Bates mentions that he was in a loony bin, you know what he's gonna do. The only thing I really liked was that I felt Leo and Kate acted excellently, and the way it looks, cuz I adore the 50's look. That's why I would give the movie a 5/10 or 5.5/10.
That beginning line that Leo says to Kate after her show flopped had me laughing. He says something like "well that wasn't quite a success," or whatever. Besides that, I do agree that it takes itself seriously, but really, why shouldn't it?
ReplyDeleteI don't see your point about the crazy guy being a "false prophet." He was the only one in the movie that could see through all their bullshit. He was genuinely happy when he found out they were going to Paris, trying to leave the "hopeless emptiness." It's not something that he could do, what with being in an institution, but it's something that he knows is the right thing to do. He was right to call out Leo's manhood and cowardice. It's pretty obvious what the movie's trying to say when the only person who can see the truth was institutionalized.
That just proves how douchey the movie is. Look everyone, you are all insane living your life according to the way that normal people have to, and yeah it does suck. You could ask any person out of college if life sucks dick, and if they would like to give up everything and move to Paris and start anew, and they would say yes. But apparently everyone is a moron, and they need some crazy guy to point this shit out to them. He also has the benefit of not having experienced real normal life, so he has no true perspective on anyything that occurs. As someone who goes to college, i.e. an outsider, what makes me wanna join the real world? Nothing. But it's a curse that people have to live with, and everyone knows this and accepts this; it's just a fact of life.
ReplyDeleteYo, is it just me, or is Mike's comment about the Watchmen soundtrack not showing up for anyone else when you click on it?
